I have been a fan of Native American mystery stories since I discovered Tony Hillerman's books about Chee and Leaphorn, I read all of them and his daughter's books, then all the Wind River series by Margaret Coel, the Ella Clah books by Aimee and David Thurlo, the Navajo Nation series by R. Allen Chappel, then I found the Charlie Moon series by James D. Doss and Charlie and the cast of characters in these well told stories have become friends. I found the Stone Butterfly to bring a lot of sadness at points and great humor at other points and always kept me turning the pages, I always enjoy the antics of Aunt Daisy and really liked the new friendship of Sidewinder and Sweet Alice. it all comes together for a great twist towards the end. While some may not like Mr. Doss's style I find it unique and quite entertaining.

Stone Butterfly Charlie Moon Mysteries James D Doss 9780312340544 Books Reviews

I love the series am so sad Mr Doss passed away. They are truly a a good series bad things happen but good things too and its not so ugly as far as violence or language. I see enough bad things on the news I don't want to read things like that for enjoyment. I truly hope someone picks up the series and continues with it. There is still alot to be told. Now I am writtne this review for you but if you check I read this book last year and for some reason you charged me for it again and sent me this. I called and also did an online chat and never got it resolved.
The endings of these books is al as a bit of a surprise, but this one was completely unexpected. A bit too much ch do for me, but I'm glad it turned out like it did.
Enjoyed the book. But most of all the antics of the old Ute Auntie of Charlie Moon, Aunt Daisy. At one point I laughed so hard as I could just visualize the old Auntie driving her best friends car when she had never driven before....was so funny.....
This book has a twist at the end that I actually felt I needed to go back and read a couple prior chapters. I was disappointed that it took the whole book to dissect a mystery, then the author wrapped it up way too quickly. I like the Charlie Moon book series and have already started on the next book.
This is the fourth Charlie Moon book I have read recently. All purchased because of the advertised reportedly Hillerman similarities. There are none. It is another poor attempt to write a story with supposed Native American characters and it falls flat. The characters and story are irrelevant, jumbled, and don't fit anywhere. Better to reread Tony Hillerman or wait for Anne Hillerman's next book.
This is, as usual, a good James D. Doss read. Aunt Daisy is up to her usual antics and the young Sarah is a very strong character, struggling to stay ahead of the law and those who would do her harm.

Charlie Moon, the tall Native American land owner and detective, is the constant, of course. He's sexy, always hungry, sometimes childish and ever on the money. If his buddy, Chief of Police Scott Parrish, can't do it, Charlie will help him or do it himself! And he will definitely take care of this predicament just as we know he's going to. It's just the way he does it that makes it surprising and keeps you reading.

Doss makes the rugged Colorado terrain come alive and you can see pictures in your mind as you read.

A good book to relax with. full of adventure and James D. Doss' singular form of comic entertainment. I like the whole package.
What I like about Doss is the fact his writing is lyrical, poetry in the story telling. He uses interesting phrases ...instead of a ford, he says something like a product of Ford Motor Company. I never get how the characters work. After reading up to elegant, I constantly logo for clues, and I miss them! I love it! Wish he was still around! He is better than Hillerman, and I love Hillerman !
